Put down the put-downs

Self-deprecating humor. We all know how it works.

If I put myself down, then it makes it harder for someone else to put me down. And maybe someone else will actually be moved to say something positive.

The problem with that is that people always believe what you tell them. Even if they know you're joking.

Friday Archive Dive: Charging for Con Sketches

Today's Archive Dive comes from January 13, 2009, when we discussed whether or not one should charge for convention sketches.

One of the most passionate debates in comic-convention exhibition is whether to charge for sketches. There are two major camps.

One says that the cartoonist should charge for sketches at conventions. Period. You're there to make money, after all, and this is an important source of revenue. And, truly, most of your fans are only too happy to pay a small fee to get a personalized piece of original art.

In the other camp are those who insist that free sketches are an easy way to thank your fans for their support. Moreover, asking for money for these sketches is an insult to a fan who already paid to get in the doors to see you at a convention.

So, who's right?

Robert Khoo: Know Your Audience

Part of my job is talking to people that have no idea who or what Penny Arcade is. A pretty accurate description of the strip is "a political cartoon about the game industry," but honestly - the people that I deal with really don't give a shit about what our content is (it's rare to find an agency that truly understands a niche audience). What they're interested in is: who does give a shit about our content. They care about the readers. They care about what makes them tick, and, as mercenary as it sounds, they care about the products they buy and how they can leverage that information to sell their own.
