Making money at comic conventions

It has been brought to my attention in recent months that a large number of creators out there (the majority, even) treat conventions as a source of promotion, rather than a source of income.  I had always heard Dave Kellett on Webcomics Weekly state that he will not do a convention unless he feels that he can turn a significant profit.  However, until recently I didn’t realize that his view was in the minority, nor that he has taken flak in the past for holding this conviction.
