Wibiya folds

After buying Wibiya in April 2011 for a reported $45 million, Conduit is folding the Web-app platform at the end of the year.

I endorsed Wibiya in June 2010. I thought it was particularly strong tool for non-WordPress users to add social-media functionality to their sites. Since converting to a Comic Easel/WordPress CMS, I've substituted JetPack for this functionality.

Nonetheless, if you're using Wibiya, you can write Libbie@wibiya.com for information on exporting your data from your dashboard in a CSV file.

Saturday Deep Dive: Malicious Ads

Today's dive into the deeper archive of Webcomics.com takes us to Oct. 4, 2011, when I discussed how to handle a malicious ad when it starts appearing on your site.

Facebinks.com (a company that seems to be located in Bejing, according to this) is delivering a malicious, pop-over ad to Web sites, offering readers a chance to win a free iPad -- and implying that the deal is an exclusive offer from that site -- even including a deceptive trademark identifier (®) after the site's URL at the bottom left-hand corner of the ad.

When the user tries to close the ad, another pop-up appears, with one of those "do you really want to leave this site -- Yes or No" messages that make you wonder what you're really answering "Yes or No" to if you click it.

In the end, most users force-quit their browsers and write the site an angry e-mail (and rightly so).

This happened on my own site, and I'm trying to track the problem to its source. In the interest of sharing information, I will post my progress. But first, here are a few tips on making sure your readers aren't being innundated with annoying ads...

Friday Archive Dive: Digital Press Kit

Today's Archive Dive comics from Oct 9, 2012, when I discussed the creation of a digital press kit.

I've always recommended having a press kit on hand for conventions and other personal appearances.

When I was recently approached for a newspaper piece, I realized that I really ought to have a digital equivalent.

My digital press kit includes...

Hitch It / Ditch It: Cow Texas, House of Madness, Sailors Freedom

This is the third installment of this year's Hitch It / Ditch It Hot Seat critique series. The concept is straight-forward: I identify one element in the participant's comic that is working really well, and then I identify something that needs to be improved. As always, this is only the start of the conversation -- the discussion continues in the Comments section below. Links are in the headers.
