Comic-Con 2010: Webcomics.com Lightning Round Audio

Although I had taped a video of the Webcomics.com Lightning Round at Comic-Con, I chose a poor location for my Flip Mino, and the result was less than stellar. However, the audio came out quite nicely, so for those of you who couldn't make it to San Diego (or those of you who couldn't get in due to the Lost squatters), here's the entire panel discussion as a Webcomics.com exclusive. Robert Khoo, Scott Kurtz and I covered about twenty questions in lightning-round format covering almost every aspect of webcomics in one form or another. Listen to this.

Legalities of Unpaid Interns

Since using unpaid interns has been fairly popular among webcartoonists for the past several years, it's interesting to see this New York Times piece on ther legal issues involved.

With job openings scarce for young people, the number of unpaid internships has climbed in recent years, leading federal and state regulators to worry that more employers are illegally using such internships for free labor.

Convinced that many unpaid internships violate minimum wage laws, officials in Oregon, California and other states have begun investigations and fined employers. Last year, M. Patricia Smith, then New York’s labor commissioner, ordered investigations into several firms’ internships. Now, as the federal Labor Department’s top law enforcement official, she and the wage and hour division are stepping up enforcement nationwide.

Friday Archive Dive: Taking the Leap

Today's Archive Dive is from May 13, 2010, when we discussed taking the leap to full-time webcartooning.

Assuming the eventual (financial) goal of a webcomic artist is to support themselves, there seems to be a bit of a middle ground between "beer and pizza money" and "quit the day job".   It would seem to me that if you treat your webcomics income just as straight income, you're never going to want to go from (day job + comic) to just (comic). Is this actually a concern?  How did you handle the transition?
